HTY 161 - Medieval Africa

HTY 161 introduces students to African history up to the sixteenth century, examining Africa as a continent connected to the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean worlds, long at the crossroads of global interactions. Using historical evidence such as letters, legal documents, poems, folklore, art, and maps, we’ll learn about when Africa was home to warrior queens, leading scholars of Christianity and Islam, the richest man in the world, the first university in the world, and the capital of an intercontinental book trade.
