MUS 301 - You Can’t Sing That: Music Censorship Censorship, the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are “offensive,” happens whenever government or private groups succeed in imposing their personal political or moral values on others. While music does not convey precise statements those in authority might want to ban, words with music, such as songs, opera, or musical theater, can be the target of censorship because of a difference in politics or morals and the fact that the appeal might move a group to violence or subversion. This course will study musical censorship across different countries, eras, and political systems.
