2024-2025 Undergraduate Catalog
Industrial Engineering, B.S.
|
|
The industrial engineering program provides a broad scientific and engineering design education to be successful in a variety of industrial pursuits including manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and logistics. The industrial engineer develops and maintains systems addressing complex industrial problems and is principally concerned with reducing system wastes while improving reliability. The industrial engineer must be well versed in basic engineering science, mathematics, and statistics, and have excellent communication skills.
The industrial engineering program is on track to receive accreditation by the EAC (Engineering Accreditation Commission) of ABET (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) by 2028. Accreditation can be retroactively applied to up to two academic years.
Graduates of the program are prepared to:
- design a system or process to meet client requirements within economic, social, and physical constraints;
- identify, formulate, and communicate complex industrial problems, and their solutions, to a community of peers and the general public;
- function on, and lead, multidisciplinary teams to meet project objectives; and
- manage the scope, cost, timing, and quality to successfully complete projects for stakeholders.
To graduate, students must fulfill the core requirements of the degree program for a total of 124.5 credits as described in the Program Requirements. A requirement of the major may not be used to satisfy an elective of the major.

Program Requirements
Minimum number of credits required for the major: 124.5. For graduation, industrial engineering majors must maintain an overall grade point average of 2.0 and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in engineering courses.
Permission from the student’s advisor is required before taking any course outside the University to satisfy a requirement for the major. Course requirements are as follows (concurrent Core Curriculum requirements are noted in parentheses for reference).
Recommended Core Curriculum Sequence for the Major
Courses listed below are required for the concentration and also satisfy University Core Curriculum requirements.
Engineering Core (34 credits)
Industrial Engineering Core (33 credits)
Computer Programming (4 credits)
Basic Science (14.5 credits)
Technical Electives (12 credits)
- Completion of four (4) engineering courses with three or more credits each at 300-level or higher with a prefix of EGN, ELE, IDE, or MEE that are not otherwise required in the program and track.
USM Core Requirements
The USM Core Curriculum is a coherent, integrative, and rigorous liberal education that enables our graduates to be world-minded, intentional, life-long learners and captures your general education degree requirements.
Please Note: Core requirements may be part of your major and/or minor, and Core may have been fulfilled with transfer credit. Please consult your MaineStreet Degree Progress Report (DPR) and review your degree progress with your Advisor. For additional information, access the USM Core webpage.
