The Certificate of Graduate Study in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed to accommodate teachers, educational technicians, and other holders of baccalaureate degrees who do not want to complete all of the requirements for a master’s degree but who wish to obtain foundational knowledge in teaching multilingual learners. Students who complete the certificate program receive official transcript recognition of their work and a certificate from the Literacy, Language, and Culture department. Certificate completers are able to plan effective instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students and may earn state endorsement in ESOL if other requirements are met. Please consult with the Maine Department of Education.

Program Requirements (total 15 credits)

Required Courses: 9 credits

Select two courses from the list below, for a total of 6 credits:

EDU 559 - Methods for Teaching Reading and Writing to Multilingual Learners
EDU 562 - Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in the Classroom
(Note: This may be taken if graduate student has completed another diversity course)
EDU 563 - ESL Testing and Assessment
EDU 567 - Theories of Second Language Acquisition

Grade Requirements

Graduate students must receive a grade of “B-” or higher in all courses to be successful in Literacy Education and TESOL programs.
If the above grade requirements are not met, students may be required to repeat the course.
Additionally, students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.00.
