The Certificate of Graduate Study in Teaching History (18 credits) is designed to accommodate educators, and other holders of master’s or baccalaureate degrees who wish to obtain knowledge, skills, and dispositions appropriate for designing history curriculum and assessments. It is also designed to afford teachers the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of history in areas understudied at the graduate level or not previously studied at the undergraduate level. Students who participate in the program will have exposure to theory, research, and practice related to the professoriate and to teaching and learning in the discipline of history. Students who complete program requirements receive official transcript recognition of their work and a certificate from the University of Southern Maine. They will also meet NACEP (National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships) standards in order to teach college-level history survey courses.
The Graduate Certificate is designed to achieve a range of student learning outcomes. Outcomes for individuals who complete the Certificate include the following:
- Students will be able to analyze primary and secondary sources, and place them in historical context, to facilitate the development of lesson plans and other activities related to teaching.
- Students will demonstrate critical thinking through interpretation and synthesis of primary and secondary sources, so that they might facilitate the development of lesson plans and other activities related to teaching.
- Students will be able to produce a final project that demonstrates learning through reflective analysis of completed course projects and through specific examples of curriculum development appropriate to high school education.
- Students will develop greater mastery of scholarship than that of the average undergraduate.
The Certificate of Graduate Study in Teaching History is an 18-credit hour program. Students must receive a B or better in all courses that count toward the certificate.
