Theatre Minor

The minor in theatre is designed to provide basic foundational knowledge in both theatre theory and practice, including history, performance, design and technology. The theatre minor consists of 19 credit hours of courses in theatre, providing students with not only the understanding of the time-demanding nature of theatre as a craft, but also key skills in collaboration and communication. The minor is open to all students who would like to begin a theatre education, and/or maintain and augment previous theatre experience. In order to declare the minor, students must have a minimum 2.0 G.P.A. and have completed the core competency in College Writing. Students must receive a grade of C or higher in all required courses in the theatre minor.

Program Requirements

The minimum number of credits (exclusive of the University’s Core curriculum) required for the minor: 19.

Students must complete 2 semesters (1 credit total) of Theatre Workshop with either THE 141 and/or THE 142. Theatre minors must successfully complete THE 101 before enrolling in THE 141 or THE 142.

Required Courses: Every minor must take the following five courses (13 Credits)

THE 101 - Introduction to Theatre and Text Analysis Credits: 3
THE 102 - Acting for Non-Majors Credits: 3
THE 201 - Cultural History of Theatre Credits: 3
THE 136 - Fundamentals of Design Credits: 3
THE 141 - Theatre Workshop I (0.5 credit) and/or THE 142 - Theatre Workshop II (0.5 credits) Credits: 1
Students must complete 2 semesters (1 credit total) of Theatre Workshop with either THE 141 and/or THE 142. Theatre minors must successfully complete THE 101 before enrolling in THE 141 or THE 142.

Electives:

Every minor must take a minimum of two courses (6 Credits) from available THE electives chosen in consultation with a Department of Theatre advisor in accordance with the interests of the student.

Theatre minor students who fail to maintain a 2.5 overall GPA may not be allowed to participate in Department productions in either an acting or technical capacity (except for lab duties or requirements related to coursework). These GPA standards are required for graduation and a grade of C or better is required in all theatre and dance courses.
