Health Sciences, Integrative Professional Studies, B.S. (Degree Completion)

Program Requirements

• Minimum number of credits (exclusive of the University’s Core Curriculum) required for the Health Sciences, Integrative Professional Studies major: 30. 

• Minimum grade requirement for major courses listed below: C-.

Retention and Progression Requirements

While enrolled in Health Sciences, students must:

• Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50.

• Earn a minimum grade of C- in all required courses. Students receiving a grade lower than C- in a required course will not be allowed to sequence into post-requisite coursework until the prerequisite deficiency has been rectified.

Probation

Students will be placed on academic probation for failure to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50. Students failing to rectify the GPA deficiency within a one-year probationary period will be removed from their declared major and from their status as a student within the Department. Upon rectifying the GPA deficiency, students can reapply for admission into a Departmental major.

Graduation Requirements

Students will graduate with a BS in Health Sciences when the following requirements are satisfied:

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50.

• Completion of all University Core Curriculum requirements.

• Completion of all Health Sciences core required coursework with minimum grades of C-.

• Completion of coursework within one track of study with minimum grades of C-.

• Completion of 120 credits.

Degree Requirements

The BS in Health Sciences consists of 120 credit hours: University Core Curriculum courses, Health Sciences major required core courses, a track of study, and approved electives if needed to complete the 120-minimum credit requirement.

Requirements for students pursuing this track within the track are:

• Minimum of 75 credits transferred into the program

  • Prior coursework must include Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BIO 111 , BIO 113  or equivalents) with associated lab courses (BIO 112 , BIO 114  or equivalents)

  • One of the following lecture and lab courses:

    • Physics - one semester with lab (minimum 3 credits)

    • Biology - one semester with lab (minimum 3 credits)

    • or a one-semester, science-based course with lab, approved by the department chair

• Completion of at least 120 credits

• Satisfaction of the 30-credit residency requirement for USM

• Satisfaction of the USM Degree Completion Core Curriculum requirements

• *Returning USM students must not have been enrolled at USM for at least 2 years to be eligible for this degree completion program option. This option is not available as a double major or dual degree.

• CHY 107 - Chemistry for Health Sciences Credits: 3

• CHY 113 - Principles of Chemistry I Credits: 3
• NUR 252 - Human Nutrition Credits: 3
• BPH 201 - Fundamentals of Public Health Credits: 3

• or

• SBS 336 - Fundamentals of Public Health Credits: 3
• PSY 100 - Introduction to Psychology Credits: 3
• PSY 2XX Psychology course 200-level or higher (PSY 201 cannot be used to fulfill this requirement) or REC XXX
• SPM 219 - Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness Credits: 3
• SPM 230 - Psychology of Physical Activity and Sport Credits: 3
• SPM 350 - Health Promotion Programs Credits: 3
• SPM 477 - Health Research Methods Credits: 3
