Athletic Coaching Minor

This minor is designed to prepare students for coaching athletes at the youth, recreational, middle and secondary school, sports club, and intercollegiate and professional levels. The curriculum includes an introduction to the organization and administration of athletics as well as practical work coaching in an athletic setting at all levels. Attention is also given to prevention and care of the most common injuries occurring in athletic programs. The minor helps to prepare students to begin a career in coaching with a solid base of philosophy, sport-specific knowledge, and practical experience. Students have the opportunity to learn first-hand from seasoned coaches and then apply their knowledge through field experiences and internships with local programs. Students may take courses as electives or as part of the certificate program.

Program Requirements

Upon completion of the 18-credit minor, a certificate will be presented to students. In addition, a notation will be made on the student’s transcript indicating proficiency in the area of athletic coaching as determined by the minor.

  • 6 credits of coaching courses from Area A, or
  • 3 credits of coaching courses from Area A and 3 credits of non-coaching courses from Area B
