Accelerated Graduate Pathway to M.S.Ed. in Teaching and Learning (ETEP)

The Accelerated ETEP (Extended Teacher Education Program) Pathway allows USM undergraduate students with an interest in teacher certification to have courses taken in their undergraduate sequence apply toward the graduate degree in Teaching and Learning (ETEP). This allows for exposure to education related courses over multiple years and a reduced course load during the intensive internship year.

Requirements at the undergraduate level:

Recommended Courses and Core

HRD 200 - Multicultural Human Development (Sociocultural Analysis Core Requirement)
EDU 310 - Purpose of Schools in a Democracy (Ethical Inquiry/International Core Requirements)
or
SED 300 - Ethics & Youth w/Exceptionalities (Ethical Inquiry Core Requirement)

Required Courses (9 credits)*

Apply for Accelerated pathway prior to enrolling in any 500-level courses.

EDU 222 - Foundations of Language and Literacy Development
SED 335 - Students with Exceptionalities in General Education (Diversity Core Requirement)
EDU 442 - Professional Seminar in Teaching*

*Currently, only SED 235 and EDU 222 (3 credits each) are fully approved as required courses in the Accelerated Pathway. It is anticipated that EDU 442 will be approved for use in the Accelerated Pathway in the course of the Fall 2021 semester, bringing the total approved credits to 9.

EDU 643 - Inquiry in Education may be substituted with
SED 699 - Special Education Research Capstone

EDU 667 - Teacher Leadership Capstone

Admissions:

Application Requirements and Instructions

Deadline: Submission of applications is strongly recommended by December 1, but also accepted through January 30 of a given academic year.

Submit the following:

Graduate Application to the ETEP program. Application must be submitted while completing 300 or 400 level courses, and prior to taking any 500 level course. You cannot be accepted until after the completion of EDU 222 and SED 235.
Two Recommendations: one each from field placement supervisor/mentor, and major professor. Each must have a separate form for recommendation.
Résumé showing history of employment, education, and community service.
Essay - Please write a thoughful response to the following prompt: The challenge of teaching is helping to ensure ALL students are provided with an equitable learning experience. What would a school look like that provides all students equitable opportunity to learn? What practices to ensure ALL students are learning have you seen, know of, been a part of, or been inspired to emulate?
Catalog of Experiences (2 to 3 pages): Provide an annotated list of experiences particularly significant in your development as a learner and prospective teacher. Applicants should:

Describe your experiences working with children and/ or adolescents
Describe events that have deepened your understanding of the content area(s) you may teach
Reflect critically on what you have gained from those experiences, both personally and professionally.

Admission to the MS.Ed. in Teaching and Learning (MSED) for Accelerated ETEP Pathway students:

Students will apply to the MS.Ed in Teaching and Learning (ETEP) program using the standard graduate admission application; upon satisfactory completion of the BA degree requirements, a student should have maintained a GPA of 3.0 for courses in the program, with grades no lower than a B- in the following courses: SED 235, EDU 222 and EDU 442*. Recommendations, Resume, Essay, and Catalog of Experiences from the Accelerated ETEP Pathway application will be used as part of the submission requirements of the graduate admission application.
Students will become fully matriculated in the MS.Ed. in Teaching and Learning (ETEP) program once all conditions for admission have been met.
