The Department of Biological Sciences offers a four-year program leading to a B.S. in biology. Within the biology major, some students pursue concentrations in Human Biology or Biotechnology. The biology major has a core set of biology course requirements in addition to other biology courses that may be elected to suit individual interests and needs. Additional required courses in chemistry, mathematics, and physics reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the biological sciences. Students also gain strong hands-on experience by taking at least 4-6 laboratory classes. Many students enhance their academic and research experience through research experience in USM faculty research labs, field sides, or internships in a wide range of nearby partner organizations in the greater Portland area and throughout the state of Maine.
In addition to the B.S. degree options, the Department offers minors in biology and in ecology, a two-year nondegree program in pre-pharmacy, and postbaccalaureate certificates in pre-medical studies and pre-veterinary studies.
The Department of Biological Sciences also offers a master’s degree in biology, with both thesis research and literature research options (see the USM Graduate Catalog).
In conjunction with the School of Education and Human Development, the Department of Biological Sciences participates in the Secondary Teacher Education program in Life Sciences. Our Biology major provides a strong foundation in the life sciences, preparing students for careers in healthcare, research, environmental science, education, and science policy. The Human Biology concentration is designed for students interested in clinical and health-related professions or biomedical research, while the Biotechnology concentration prepares students for careers in biotech, biopharma, molecular diagnostics, and laboratory-based industries. Across all pathways, students develop rigorous analytical, laboratory, and quantitative skills that position them for graduate study or direct entry into the scientific workforce.
