Accelerated Graduate Pathway to M.S.Ed. in Teaching and Learning (ETEP)


The Accelerated ETEP (Extended Teacher Education Program) Pathway allows USM undergraduate students with an interest in teacher certification to have courses taken in their undergraduate sequence apply toward the graduate degree in Teaching and Learning (ETEP). This allows for exposure to education related courses over multiple years and a reduced course load during the intensive internship year.

Requirements at the undergraduate level:


  • Declare the Accelerated pathway prior to enrolling in any 500-level courses.
  • Maintain a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Submit a Graduate Admission Application to the Master of Science in Education in Teaching and Learning (ETEP) after completion of ~75 credits. For full graduate admission instructions, visit Admission Information: MSEd in Teaching.

Recommended Core Courses


The following undergraduate courses will help prepare you for the graduate education courses.

Must earn a grade of B- or better in each.

  • EDU 550 Professional Internship in Secondary Education (6 credits)

Recommendation for initial teacher certification made after successful completion of the courses above.

  • EDU 643 Inquiry in Education (SED 699 Directed Study in Special Education, OR EDU 667 Professional Educator Capstone may serve as substitutions)

Admissions:


Application Requirements and Instructions

Deadline: Submission of applications is strongly recommended by December 1, but also accepted through January 30 of a given academic year.

Submit the following:

  1. Graduate Application to the ETEP program. Application must be submitted while completing 300- or 400-level courses, and prior to taking any 500-level course. 
  2. Submit the accelerated pathway application via the Assessment System.
  3. Free Admissions Account and Application in Student Learning & Licensure (SL&L): In addition to the materials listed below, you must also complete a free SL&L Admissions Account and Application in order for your accelerated pathway application to be reviewed.
  4. Three Recommendations: one each from field placement supervisor/mentor, education professor, and major professor. Each must have a separate form for recommendation.
  5. Résumé showing history of employment, education, and community service.
  6. Essay - Please write a thoughtful response to the following prompt: The challenge of teaching is helping to ensure ALL students are provided with an equitable learning experience. What would a school look like that provides all students equitable opportunity to learn? What practices to ensure ALL students are learning have you seen, know of, been a part of, or been inspired to emulate?
  7. Catalog of Experiences (2 to 3 pages): Provide an annotated list of experiences particularly significant in your development as a learner and prospective teacher. Applicants should:
    • Describe your experiences working with children and/ or adolescents
    • Describe events that have deepened your understanding of the content area(s) you may teach
    • Reflect critically on what you have gained from those experiences, both personally and professionally.

Admission to the MS.Ed. in Teaching and Learning (MSED) for Accelerated ETEP Pathway students:

  • Students will apply to the MS.Ed in Teaching and Learning (ETEP) program using the standard graduate admission application; upon satisfactory completion of the BA degree requirements, a student should have maintained a GPA of 3.0 for courses in the program, with grades no lower than a B- in both EDU 310  and EDU 442 .   • Recommendations, Resume, Essay, and Catalog of Experiences from the Accelerated ETEP Pathway application will be used as part of the submission requirements of the graduate admission application.
  • Students will become fully matriculated in the MS.Ed. in Teaching and Learning (ETEP) program once all conditions for admission have been met.
