Mechanical Engineering, B.S.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs by College

The mechanical engineering program is accredited by the EAC (Engineering Accreditation Commission) of ABET (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).

Graduates of the program are prepared to:

  1. excel as engineers in technologically-intensive environments;
  2. succeed in post-baccalaureate and graduate studies;
  3. transfer their acquired skills to a variety of contexts and endeavors; and
  4. contribute to society as broadly educated, articulate, and ethical professionals and citizens.

In order to graduate, students must fulfill the core requirements of the degree program (either the standard ME or the IE concentration), for a total of 128.5 credits as described in the Program Requirements. A requirement of the major may not be used to satisfy an elective of the major.

The mechanical engineering program may be augmented with a concentration in industrial engineering or an M.B.A. with a concentration in engineering.

Program Requirements

Minimum number of credits required for the major: 128.5. For graduation, mechanical engineering majors must maintain an overall grade point average of 2.0 and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in engineering courses.

Permission from the student’s advisor is required before taking any course outside USM to satisfy a requirement of the major. Course requirements are as follows (concurrent Core Curriculum requirements are noted in parentheses for reference).

University Core Curriculum (18-24 credits)

Writing, Reading, and Inquiry 1: ENG 100 - College Writing  or equivalent
Writing, Reading, and Inquiry 2: ENG 102 - Academic Writing  or equivalent
Writing, Reading, and Inquiry 3: ITP 210 - Technical Writing  or equivalent
Quantitative Reasoning: MAT 152 - Calculus A
Creative Expression: THE 170 - Public Speaking  or equivalent
Cultural Interpretation
Socio-cultural Analysis
Science Exploration: CHY 113 - Principles of Chemistry I  and CHY 114 - Laboratory Techniques I
Ethical Inquiry, Social Responsibility, and Citizenship: EGN 304 - Engineering Economics
Diversity
International
Engaged Learning: EGN 301 - Junior Design Project and the Engineering Profession

Engineering Requirements

Mathematics (15 credits)

Basic Science (14.5 credits)

Engineering Core (25 credits)

Technical Electives (12 credits)

Completion of four (4) engineering courses with three or more credits each at the junior or senior level (300-level or higher EGN, ELE or MEE) that are not otherwise required in the program and track. The Industrial Engineering Concentration prescribes one of these Technical Electives as a requirement.

Industrial Engineering Concentration

Students with a particular interest in the manufacturing, health care, transportation and logistic industries may choose the industrial engineering concentration.

Minimum number of credits required for the concentration: 128.5. For graduation, mechanical engineering majors with a concentration in industrial engineering must maintain an overall grade point average of 2.0 and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in engineering and computer science courses.

Requirements for the bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering with a concentration in industrial engineering differ from the standard mechanical engineering degree requirements as follows:

Students are not required to take these courses (12 credits):

  • ELE 219 Circuits Laboratory
  • ELE 323 Electromechanical Energy Conversion
  • MEE 331 Thermodynamics II: Flows and Cycles
  • MEE 339 Thermodynamics Laboratory
  • MEE 374 Theory and Applications of Vibrations
  • MEE 379 Dynamics and Vibrations Laboratory

Instead, they are required to take these courses (12 credits + 3 credits to satisfy one Technical Elective):

USM Core Requirements

The USM Core Curriculum is a coherent, integrative, and rigorous liberal education that enables our graduates to be world-minded, intentional, life-long learners and captures your general education degree requirements.

Please Note: Core requirements may be part of your major and/or minor, and Core may have been fufilled with transfer credit. Please consult your MaineStreet Degree Progress Report (DPR) and review your degree progress with your Advisor.  For additional information, access the USM Core webpage.
